As a sophomore Gillian “Gigi” Robertson photographed the Canadian singer Mac DeMarco in concert at the Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas. Robertson has been a big fan of DeMarco for a while, however she was nervous about being that close and capturing the right moment amid screaming fans. In an arena of 4,000 people, Robertson was just inches from the barrier. At her first big gig, she did her best to stay focused as the photographer and not just a fan.

“It was just such a cool experience to feel the energy and not being in the crowd and pursuing something that I love,” Robertson said.

Robertson, now a senior at Argyle High School in Texas, is no stranger to photographing big events. From concerts to sports and art she has a true passion for photography. During her freshman year, Robertson’s interest in journalism emerged. Early in her high school career she joined the newspaper, and by her sophomore year she was the sports editor. Although she had climbed the newspaper leadership ladder her passion was still photography.

“I want to bring beauty and creativity to the world with the things that I take photos (of),” Robertson said.

She credits her mom for pushing her to pursue photography as a career. After a volleyball injury, Robertson had a lot of free time to explore what made her happy outside of sports. Now as a senior she hopes to major in creative media production at Gaylord College.

“I want to push my creative limits and get more interesting and different photos into the world that are representative of a culture. I just don’t want to take pictures of basic people doing basic things,” Robertson said. “I want to do something more.”
