Before and after February 24 2022: My Whole Life Changed

What has changed in my life since Feb. 24, 2022? I don’t want to think back, even in my mind.

My name is Karolina Yashchenko, and I am a Ukrainian. I believe you already have a rough idea of my country, because in the last few months, many, many people have heard about Ukraine–it’s just a pity that it’s under such circumstances. There is a war in our country, and I want everyone to know about this, and do everything possible to end it, because Russia is an aggressor country that will not stop at us, and it is a threat to many other countries of the world.

When you wake up from the trembling voice of your mother in the next room, and on your phone there are many messages from your friends who are sitting in a panic about what is happening what you feel is . . . misunderstanding, fear, despair, All my plans, goals and dreams were merely shortened. I was living in Kryvyi Rih, and in a few hours after the invasion all my relatives came to my house from another region so that we could all stay together. At this moment, my whole life changed. Although I couldn’t come to my senses at first, the other day I was re-reading the news, then I realized that there is no way out of the situation so far, so I started volunteering.

This is what I’ve been doing since then: weaving camouflage nets, creating amulets for soldiers, working on the hotline, conducting programs for displaced children, collecting aid for various people and many other things. Every small contribution brings us closer to victory. In such a difficult time for my homeland, I found an opportunity to help her. In addition, by volunteering, I gained new useful skills and met many wonderful people around me, and most importantly, I realized that our country cannot be conquered!

How have the lives of thousands of Ukrainians changed?

Feb. 24, 2022, 3:40 a.m. All of Ukraine shuddered at the so-called “special operation” appointed by the Russian government, but in fact it is a war—a well-thought-out and planned war, the purpose of which is to destroy Ukrainians. All the plans, dreams and goals of every person who was in the state territory at the time stopped in a second, not only mention all their properties lost. Around 7 million people was forced to leave their homes and enter to unknown countries. Military law and general mobilization have been declared in Ukraine. But the main thing that this fight takes away is the lives of hundreds of children, civilians, soldiers…

For more than a century, Ukraine has been fighting for its independence, for the right to be a separate sovereign state, but every time Russia stands in their way of our government. So, how long would this struggle continue? When would we finally live under a peaceful sky?

Over the last six months Ukrainians have changed a lot. Our people have united into a strong chain that maximizes our ability to overcome the difficulties as much as possible. Everyone is doing what they can, starting by weaving nets or making amulets for soldiers and eventually raising money for military munitions. Even many people who are currently abroad are still making every effort somehow to help Ukraine in such a difficult period. The world has never seen people as united as today’s Ukrainian nation. I also want to remember the president of Ukraine – Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who has not left the country, but has kept defending our country and doing everything to ensure that we— Ukrainian people—live under a peaceful sky. Some official websites provide general data about the number of casualties about the military and the civilian population, but the actual numbers are much higher than those.

Yes, we put up strong resistance to the Russian troops, but this is not enough: every day they bomb dozens of public places where many people are present; every day they kill our compatriots, both children and adults; every day they destroy someone’s dreams. Russia is a terrorist country that represents an enormous threat to humanity, so let’s not remain silent! Every repost, mention of the war in Ukraine, providing any kind of help, is someone’s life saved. Together we can do everything!

Slava Ukraine!
